Killings of civilians by law enforcement officers on the rise.

Police check point

Recently, there's been a rise in cases of law enforcement officers killing innocent citizens. Most of these instances involves officers of the Nigerian Police Force and commercial drivers. It is alleged that most times the disagreement often results from their refusal to give bribes to the police officers.

Although there were cases that involves other law enforcement agents being guilty of this gross misconduct and indiscipline. but officers of the Police Force are mostly guilty of this and its telling on the organisation's reputation.

Few incidence has been reported where law enforcement officers fire their service weapons indiscriminately.

A naval officer shot three people in the Majidun area of Ikorodu on Monday, August 24

The naval officer was stationed to monitor surveillance around Tipper Park so as to prevent pipeline vandalism. It was reported that the officer left his duty post to unwind by drinking alcoholic drinks. When he returned, he was in a drunken state and started mishandling his gun.

At around 3pm, the gun went off, shooting three people who were going about their duty at the park. One of the injured persons was said to be a driver while the identity of the other two men was yet to be confirmed.

Policemen attached to the Taraba State Police Command have been accused of killing a driver and his conductor on the Jalingo-Wukari Road.

The incident reportedly happened around 6pm on Sunday when the policemen allegedly mounted a checkpoint in the area.

The killing of the trailer driver and his assistant reportedly followed their refusal to part with a N500 bribe demanded by the policemen at the checkpoint.

It will also be recalled that a law enforcement officer killed a taxi drive in Mile 4 Area of Port Harcourt, Rivers state. this lead to a protest and road block.

How do we explain the cause of this events. Indiscipline? Leadership problem?
